If you live in Humboldt County chances are you've spent plenty of summer days on our rivers. Whether it's the Eel, the Mad, the Van Duzen, or any of our many swimming holes, they're one of the best parts of living here. A little awareness can go a long way in helping everyone enjoy them safely.

One of the biggest seasonal concerns is blue-green algae, especially on the Eel River. Blue-green algae is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria that can produce toxins harmful to people, livestock, and especially dogs. While it sometimes looks like thick green scum or spilled paint on the water, it isn't always easy to spot. Before heading to the river, check for current advisories and avoid areas where warnings have been posted. It has already been detected this year so keep an eye out and pets out of the water.

The Mad River presents different risks. Fast-moving currents, cold water, changing channels, and unexpected deep holes can make even familiar swimming spots dangerous. River conditions can change quickly throughout the season, so it's always a good idea to be cautious and keep a close eye on children and pets.

Our rivers are one of Humboldt County's greatest treasures. With a little preparation and awareness, we can all help keep ourselves, our families, and our pets safe while enjoying everything our beautiful community has to offer.
